HK Chief Executive Proposes HK$11B Inflation Relief PackageHONG KONG --Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang proposed Wednesday a HK$11 billion relief package to ease the impact of inflation on the city's residents.
The one-off relief measures include a three-month waiver on public housing rents, extra allowance for social welfare recipients, and a price freeze on some government fees.
'We see the inflation problem worsening rapidly, tracking rising global food and energy prices, and we have to take action now,' Tsang told lawmakers in a question and answer session.
Hong Kong's inflation rate rose to 5.7% in May from 5.4% in April. Tsang said he expects the inflation rate to moderate in the medium term.
The government had earlier forecast an inflation rate of 3.4% this year, higher than 2% last year.

香港--香港特区行政长官曾荫权(Donald Tsang)周三提出110亿港元的纾困措施，用于缓解香港居民面临的通货膨胀压力。
香港政府采取的短期纾缓措施包括：为公屋居民代缴三个月租金，向享受社会福利的人士额外发放津贴以及冻结部分政府收费等。
曾荫权在出席立法会答问大会时表示，因为全球油价及食品价格持续急速上升，物价上升势头来得凶猛，他认为现在是要立即行动的时候了。
香港5月份通货膨胀率由4月份的5.4%增至5.7%。曾荫权表示，预计中期内通货膨胀压力将有所缓和。
香港政府早些时候预计，今年全年通货膨胀率为3.4%，高于去年的2%。
